Every month for the past (almost) 5 years, I've shared a free song with our email subscribers (like you!) as part of our Song-of-the-Month Club.
One of the reasons I started doing this is (and will continue to do so!) is because I'm passionate about supporting kids with high-quality music. Songs that help kids feel understood/validated, can make them laugh, or can help them get their wiggles out. Songs that their teachers, music therapists, and grown-ups like, too.
This month—and possibly, for some of the next few months this summer, we decided to do something a little different. Instead of sharing one of my songs, we shared a free download of one of my favorite children's songs created by a SPECTACULAR children’s musician!
Because we know that you’ll love this wonderful song as much as we and our Song-of-the-Month Club members do, we’re featuring it (and sharing with you a free download) on this blog post, too.
We are so happy to share the song Five Little Carrots by the amazing Music With Gina!
If you don't know Gina yet, she's also an incredibly delightful human being who loves kids from the tip top of her head way down to her toes. Her music oozes musicality and love. I call her the Regina Spektor of children's music! SHE'S SO GOOD and I'm delighted to share her with you!
Five Little Carrots is an engaging song that's perfect for spring/summer, that reinforces counting, and works with themes like: fruits & vegetables, gardening, on the farm, animals, etc.
Here's what Gina shared about the song (and some implementation ideas!):
"Five Little Carrots is a fun, interactive song that has a catchy groove to it. I love to use plush carrot props and have each child get a turn to be a “bunny rabbit” who “hops” over, picks a carrot, pretends to eat it, and then throws it in the air! I’ve also adapted the song where the class makes bunny ears with their fingers and “hops” together and I comedically “eat” each carrot. Be creative and have fun with it!"

One of our favorite music educator and music therapist, Monica of @MusicMonica on Instagram, generously shared with us one of the ways she has used Five Little Carrots in her classroom.
Monica has been teaching music virtually to her preschool students for the past two years and created this video to support the classroom curricular unit, Growing Our Garden.
She shared some details about this video:
“I intentionally did not use the numerals because learning to read number words is a higher level skill. I also waited to add the number word because subitizing (or visually recognizing how many objects without counting) is also an important math skill to practice with kids.”
Monica also shared the PDF file of the slides (and suggested directions) used as an extension activity to the song. “I used this on the 2nd day after just singing/moving to the song when it was first introduced” she said.
Download the PDF for this extension activity below!
We’ve also created a free printable you can use in your next class, session or story time!
