What kind of music did you listen to as a kid? Are any of your childhood memories closely linked to music?
Mine are.
I can still sing the 50 (nifty! IYKYK) United States in alphabetical order, and a particular ABBA album takes me right back to late-night supposed-to-be-in-bed dance parties with my parents and siblings.
When I started writing children's music, I loved that I could write in a silly, somewhat unfiltered way. Meaning, if I thought "Zibbity-zabbity-flibbity-flabbity-bippity-boppity-boo!" might make a four year old laugh, then I should be able to put that in a song without worrying about what the "proper" music types might think. It was freeing! (And what do you know? The Shy Little Monster is probably my most popular children's song.)
More recently, I see videos and hear stories about kids listening to or singing my songs, and I've come to realize that it can be deeper than that. The five year old flexing their muscles and singing, "I am brave, I am strong, I can do things even when they're hard", or a child on the autism spectrum able to express, "I need a break!!", or a classroom teacher using "Breathe" or "Yoga Song" for a sensory break.
They're more than songs.
They're affirming and validating messages repeated over and over again. They're tools to help kids through difficult moments. It sounds cheesy, but they're love. They are my little, teeny tiny way to help kids feel a little bit more love in this world.
My first collection of children's songs!
Inspired by the impact that music can make in early childhood, continuously seeing how educators and therapists use my songs to validate and support kids and after countless requests I’ve received over the years, my first collection of collection of children’s songs is finally here!
