Self-Care (And An Update!)

This month, I am choosing self care.

To tell you the truth, I have been overwhelmed this week (I’ll tell you why in a little bit). And the reason I have been overwhelmed, besides just the time of year— it’s December when I’m writing this, it’s because I’m a MAJOR introvert.

I am somebody who likes to be behind the scenes. I know that's kind of strange because I have a podcast and I often “hop on” Instagram stories, but it is true. Being behind-the-scenes is what I prefer (that’s why I love working online!). Side note: I’m a musician and I don’t love performing. If I was in a band, I’d actually love to be a background singer, that’d be super fun.

What happened this week? This very introverted person (me!) got featured on NPR this week, which is really exciting and such an honor! I've listened to NPR for over 15 years ever since I could drive in my car and PR has been on. I was featured with my amazing friend, music therapist and educator, Monica Levin.

Elizabeth Blair from NPR found my song, School’s A Little Different This Year, on the internet and contacted me, who then later on contacted Monica since they wanted another teacher to. So, we were featured together on this incredible article that ended up being, not just the front page, but the top story for half a day on NPR.org. Then, on Sunday morning, the audio version of this article was featured on Weekend Edition, which was way more fun than the written version, because you can hear Monica’s students in the background, you can hear my music and you can hear our direct quotes and our passion for the work we do came through a little bit more on the radio version (included here down below).

I'm feeling very grateful and Incredibly overwhelmed, just to be honest. It feels like a big a deal.

I find myself being like “Well, why am I feeling excited but also feeling very anxious, nervous and a little bit like of imposter syndrome?” I'm experiencing all these different feelings and I'm just allowing myself to feel them without any kind of judgment with curiosity.

Personally, I thought I would just be excited, but it's much more complicated than that. I think that we can often be so hard on ourselves and second-guess whether or not recognition is deserved. If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook or regularly listen to the Music For Kiddos Podcast, I often talk about and encourage my friends and the people around me to engage in self care. This time, I am taking my own advice and I am engaging in self-care and one of the things we are doing is that, we're going to go ahead and take the rest of the month off from the Music For Kiddos Podcast.

How are you engaging in self-care this month? Let’s connect over on Instagram and let me know!
