We interviewed Kaiti Shelton on the Music For Kiddos Podcast, and here are some of the highlights:

“I have been considered legally blind since birth [due to having] a couple of genetic congenital eye conditions. I came into school as a student that could not read printed music in an effective way and I did a lot by ear, copying other classmates or working extra with a teacher.

I listened to a lot of cassette recordings, and I'd have to take them home and memorize the music, still memorizing a lot of my music today. Something I realized is that, the more that I worked with blind children, (especially at a program for blind music learners where I was a student), that there's a lot of holes in the education for these kids.”

Kaiti continues: “I really think that it's important (and it's becoming an advocacy passion of mine over the past couple of years) to try to find a way that we can work together so that these kids are getting the same quality of education that we are giving to sighted students, whether that be in music literacy and making sure that they're included in ensembles.

It starts in early childhood, and the earlier we start to give them more resources, I think the better off these students would be in the long run to actually have more opportunity and more equity in pursuing music, if that's what they want to do.”
