We don’t have to stand up to engage in meaningful movement. We can dance, move our bodies and have fun while sitting or even lying down. That’s why I’m sharing my sitting movement song with you— Move To The Beat.

Move To The Beat is a movement song-- but not just any movement song-- it's designed for sitting. It’s the perfect song to use when kids have a high energy level but you’re worried that a standing movement song will be too stimulating. They can get their wiggles out in a more structured way.

Move To The Beat wasn't always a sitting movement song. Over the years, it transitioned into one because I found it was very useful as a transitional movement song. So sometimes, I use it after a more active movement song to get the energy down in a group or sometimes I'll use it when a group’s energy is too high after doing an active movement song and we need something in the middle, where they're moving their bodies but we're not up on our feet.

It's definitely a transitional movement song where we could use it to go from a more active, standing movements song to a sitting movement song, to then maybe even a meditation, lying down kind of song. It's also excellent for kids with limited mobility, whether they are in a hospital bed, if they use a wheelchair, or if they have a physical disability, you can adapt it to work for anybody.

Move to the Beat is perfect for:

• Immediately after a more active movement song (to help calm/transition kids!)

• Making movements more accessible and inclusive

• A rowdy group or classroom

• The car

• An airplane (Why not? Perfect with headphones.)

It also has a verse in there that has the magical power to quiet down a group of 25 preschoolers ALL AT ONCE. It’s my favorite trick for kids ages 3-6 because it brings the classroom to a complete silence--I kid you not! I discovered it by accident one day and now I use this trick all the time and it works over and over again. (Hint: It's the eyebrow verse).

When your students or clients are talking a lot and not engaged in what you’re doing, do a song that requires them to wiggle their eyebrows! It’s AMAZING to watch a whole group of 25 kids go completely silent as they try to do so.
