Two Fall Scarf Songs For Elementary Music

Scarves are such a fun prop to use with students! There are so many ways you can use scarves and various skills you can work on with them! Using movement scarves during music time with kids enhances their sensory experiences and promotes creativity. These lightweight, colorful scarves can inspire a variety of movements. As children wave, toss, or sway the scarves, children are encouraged to explore different ways to interact with music.

We have two scarf songs for you to check out this fall: “Blowing in the Wind” and “Swirly Whirly Scarves”.

Two Scarf Songs For Fall

1- Blowing In The Wind

“Blowing in the Wind” is an engaging minor key song that is great for kids 2-7 years old. Have your students help decide what the wind could be blowing around. It could be leaves blowing around, ghosts blowing around, or bats blowing around! Try to incorporate their ideas!  In the B section, kids make a tiny ball with the scarf and hide it in between their hands. They say “Ready, set, throw! ” and they get to throw their scarves up in the air!

After you are finished with the song, tell them it is time to clean up the scarves and sing again “It’s time to sneak, put it in a ball, now ready, set, throw!” And have them throw their scarves into the bag or bin that you collect them in.

2- Swirly Whirly Scarves

A scarf song that can be sung as a round. This song has a unique melody that utilizes a minor tonality which can work for the Fall or Halloween. It is great for working on preposition words with your students like “up”, “down”, and “around”.  You can practice with them ahead of time and really emphasize those directions with them. They will LOVE the B section where they get to toss their scarves up in the air and see how they fall down. This is not only fun for them, but provides a great sensory experience for them.
