What was the last year like for you as a music therapist or music educator?
After sharing about my own stories of burnout on episode 23 of the Music For Kiddos Podcast, I realize how many of us experience these feelings on our own. Your emails, messages and DMs on Instagram, reaffirmed how much shame is involved in the cycles of burnout that music therapists and music educators go through. We just don’t talk about it enough or at least, we don’t talk about it openly, which causes many of us to feel alone and like we are the only one feeling this way.
For many music therapists and music educators, feelings of burnout and isolation only escalated through 2020 due to the many challenges that surfaced caused by a global pandemic. I’m sure many of us can say that in some way or another, the last several months have been difficult, to say the least. Personally, I dealt with my own anxiety around the multiple hats I wear (as an educator, therapist, and mom) and the many back-to-back tasks I had, not allowing myself time to have space in my brain for other things.
As I reflect on last year’s happenings, I feel very fortunate to have been able to navigate all of those challenges alongside many other music therapists and music educators that were also learning how to decipher teaching or providing therapy sessions online, while handling all other responsibilities in their lives. Having the support and exchange of ideas throughout the past year during conversations with colleagues in our Community calls inside of the Music For Kiddos Community made all the difference in the world to me. Knowing how powerful it is to come together to talk about our challenges and insights (just like we have by sharing about our own burnout experiences), it led me to invite, sit down and have a conversation with three of my colleagues and Community members, Monica Levin, Anna Delgado & Jenny Focht.
We talked about their experiences as music therapists and educators navigating through a global pandemic. I invite you to join us on episode 24 of the Music For Kiddos Podcast and take some time to debrief and reflect about the past year together.
