Anti-racism and anti-oppressive practices have been increasingly placed front and center, especially after the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020. Many of us have been called to engage in self-examination, listen, amplify marginalized voices and ask ourselves what we can do better.
Those who work in early childhood, including music therapists & music educators, have the important task of making a meaningful impact on who our children might become by laying the groundwork for children to talk, understand and play a part in social justice, inclusion & equity matters.
Some of the questions that music educators and music therapists might be asking themselves when it comes to creating inclusive and equitable early childhood spaces might be:
How can I create social change in my early childhood music classes?
How can I talk to young children about topics related to race, politics, landownership, disabilities, etc.?
How can I have meaningful teaching moments in which colonialism, ableism, whiteness, and other systems of oppression are de-centered and equity, inclusion, and accessibility are upheld?
In our new course, Empowering Little Leaders, we will be exploring these and more questions while we examine the ways in which we can engage young children in critical conversations about race, identity, immigration, accessibility, land ownership and religious expression. This time around, we have three course curators who bring some of their own lived experiences and their desire to include kids in the conversations that are sometimes challenging to have into this course, and who are joining us on the 10th episode of the Music For Kiddos Podcast.
