Favorite Fall Props For Early Childhood Music Time

Do you like props as much as I do?

As a music therapist and music educator, I use props as an aid to reinforce or support movements, concepts, skills, exploration, imagination and our student’s or client’s creativity in the music space with my preschool and kindergarteners.

I’ve shared about my all time favorite props to use in my preschool and kindergarten music classes and session in this post, but some examples of props we may utilize as music therapists and music educators are:

  1. Bean bags

  2. Scarves

  3. A parachute

  4. A stretchy band

  5. Puppets

In this blog post, I’m sharing some of my favorite fall props for early childhood music time.

1. Pumpkin Balloon Ball

by Bear Paw Creek

Bear Paw Creek is the maker of these light, fabric balloon balls that provide so many opportunities for fun and engaging movements, catching, throwing, or even putting it on a parachute. We are loving the pumpkin shaped one for fall!

Check out these song and music time ideas using the ballon ball by Listen Learn Music and Music Therapy Joy!

2. Artificial Autumn Leaves

Do you LOVE using the parachute during your music therapy sessions or music classes? We do too! We are loving this idea of playing and moving with the parachute as the wind blows the falling leaves. Place these artificial fall leaves in the parachute, pretend leaves are falling from the trees and are dancing with the wind! Check out this idea on this blog post.

3. Stir Xylophone

from West Music

Have you ever used the Stir Xylophone? The Stir Xylophone is an instrument and a prop-- I love using it to build anticipation or making a "mysterious" sound. You can also pretend you're "making a soup" or "stirring a warm, cozy drink."

The ones with handles (like this one) are great for motor skills/grasp and coordinating both hands.

You can find the Stir Xylophone at WestMusic.com and use the code KIDDOS24 for free shipping on orders of over $59.95!

4. Scarves

by Bear Paw Creek

Another movement idea using props is to utilize scarves as falling leaves. Check out this post and this YouTube video for song ideas.

5. A Foam, Felt or Plastic, Medium-sized Pumpkin

from Target

These lightweight foam pumpkins from the Dollar Spot at Target would be perfect to play Pass The Pumpkin and other pumpkin-related music activities/games.

Watch the video below to learn how I use Pass The Pumpkin with my preschool & kindergarten music groups!
