Ukulele is my favorite starter instrument for kids ages 4 and up. If kids are excited about playing the ukulele, they can learn a song almost immediately. And YOU, the adult, can watch a 5-minute video from this course and then immediately teach them a song on the ukulele (even if you don't have experience).
Don't believe me? Below, I’m sharing with you a simple trick to teach kids the ukulele and if you need even more tips, check out this post with 10 tips for teaching kids the ukulele.
What is the absolute best song to help kids learn the ukulele?
🍎🍌In my opinion, it's the song Apples & Bananas.
It's just two chords: F and C7 (the chords are color-coded in the curriculum!)
Here's how it goes:
1- Start on the F chord. Strum down on quarter notes.
2- Start singing the song... "I like to eat, eat, eat... apples and..."
3- When you get to the word "bananas", switch to C7.
4- Keep singing the song. Every time you get to the word "bananas", switch back and forth between F and C7.
That's it. That simple trick works for the WHOLE song with zero exceptions, and a few small successes are all kids need to be excited about a new instrument.
