How do you incorporate mindfulness & movement in your classes or sessions?
As you may know already, movement songs are my favorite types of songs. Why? They are engaging and fun. More so, movement songs can help kids to regulate their bodies and therefore, learn ways to cope & move their bodies in a way that makes them feel well.
Some mindfulness-based, like those inspired in the practice and process of yoga, are movement songs that help children improve balance & strength, build motor skills while practicing mindfulness & self-expression. In addition to the mental & physical benefits of practicing mindful movement, guiding children through yoga-inspired movement, sequences and poses can be fun.
Yoga is a Hindu process & tradition and you can learn more about its meaning and history here and here.
If you’ve never used mindfulness-based songs with your preschool or kindergarten students or clients, here are some tips on how to incorporate music (by a Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher) to engage children through different yoga poses, as well as some visuals, yoga-inspired cards & yoga-based book ideas.
Some of our favorite mindful movement songs for kids are in this Spotify playlist, including my own Yoga Song which you may also find on our YouTube channel. I find that many lyrics & music written based on yoga poses are simple, peaceful, uplifting, and can encourage children to engage in calming or energizing movement.
