Gimme That Beat
Gimme That Beat is a song that we dedicate a whole month to near the end of the school year. It is a method for introducing quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and whole notes to 4-6 year olds in a developmentally way. We compare them to the sound of a submarine, train, plane, or helicopter. You wouldn’t believe how quickly kids get it. Kindergarteners in particular LOVE this concept and they love being able to master it through this song.

New verse submitted by Laura Teutsch:
Fire truck, fire truck, driving so fast
Sounding your siren and helping save lives
Gimme that beat
That fire truck beat
Gimme that beat
That fire truck beat
(The beat is: “beeee doooo beeee doooo” on B and G. I go through two bars of half notes even though the rest of the verses do one bar of the beat, it makes the siren sound better.)

Peanut Butter & Jelly
Traditional song (my favorite version is by Lisa Loeb)
Peanut, peanut butter (and jelly!)
Peanut, peanut butter (and jelly!)
First you take the peanuts and you pick em, you pick em
You pick em, pick em, pick em
Then you take the peanuts and you smash em, you smash em,
You smash em, smash em, smash em
Then you take the peanuts and you spread em, you spread em,
You spread em, spread em, spread em
Peanut, peanut butter (and jelly!)
Peanut, peanut butter (and jelly!)
Then you take the grapes and you pick em, you pick em
You pick em, pick em, pick em
Then you take the grapes and you smash em, you smash em,
You smash em, smash em, smash em
Then you take the grapes and you spread em, you spread em,
You spread em, spread em, spread em
Peanut, peanut butter (and jelly!)

Popcorn Song
by Stephanie Leavell
Lyrics:
Wait, wait, wait
We gotta wait, wait, wait
There's a sizzle
And a shake shake shake
Wait, wait, wait
We gotta wait, wait, wait
Til the popcorn POPS!
1 - 2 - 3
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
It's filling up the bowl and
Spilling out the sides!
1 - 2 - 3
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
I guess we better dive
Right in (eat it up!)

3 Musical Transitions for Kids
Using Music To Help Kids With Transitions
by Stephanie Leavell
Kids are wired to test boundaries. It's vital to their development and it helps them build the oh-so-important skill of independent thinking. (Well-behaved women rarely make history, right?) Even though we want our kids to learn to think freely and stand up for themselves, the way that it is expressed in that teeny, tiny 2-5 year-old body can be equally perplexing and exhausting.
